The Nature of Heat

Cold, Cool, Lukewarm, Hot

"I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot:I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth." Revelation 3:15, 16

What is Heat?

Heat is energy on the move. One of the most difficult problems scientists faced was discovering the nature of heat. Heat is a type of energy. The amount of heat in a substance depends upon three factors: Temperature; Amount of substance; Type of materials

1. Temperature- If you have two identical objects that have different temperatures the hotter one, the one with the highest temperature, contains the greater amount of heat energy.

2. Amount of substance- a cup of warm water may be at the same temperature as water in a swimming pool. But because of the swimming pools greater size the swimming pool contains more heat energy. You can melt a block of ice faster by dropping it into a swimming pool than by pouring the cup of water over it. (Try this experiment)

3. Type of substance- Substances do vary considerably in their heat capacity. One way to show heat capacity is to heat identical masses of different substances to the same temperature and then put them on a block of ice. The distance they melt into the ice is a measure of their heat capacity.

What will show the temperature of a true Christian? What will show the amount of their substance? What will show the type of their substance?

When the religion of Christ is most held in contempt, when His law is most despised, then should our zeal be the warmest and our courage and firmness the most unflinching. To stand in defense of truth and righteousness when the majority forsake us, to fight the battles of the Lord when champions are few--this will be our test. At this time we must gather warmth from the coldness of others, courage from their cowardice, and loyalty from their treason.--5T 136 (1882).

Already the judgments of God are abroad in the land, as seen in storms, in floods, in tempests, in earthquakes, in peril by land and by sea. The great I AM is speaking to those who make void His law. When God's wrath is poured out upon the earth, who will then be able to stand? Now is the time for God's people to show themselves true to principle. {SD 201.3}

The Captain of our salvation will strengthen His people for the conflict in which they must engage. . . . Now is the time when we should closely connect with God, that we may be hid when the fierceness of His wrath is poured upon the sons of men.

All who will gather warmth from the coldness of others, courage from their defections, and loyalty from their treason, will triumph with the third angel's message. {SD 201.6}

Blocks of aluminum, iron, copper, zinc and lead do not melt the same distance. Aluminum melts to a greater depth then the others. It has greater depth than the others. It has greater heat capacity than the other metals. Lead melts the least. It has the least capacity compared to the other metals.

Find the metals in the following texts: 2 Samuel 12:30 And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance. 12:31 And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

Psalms 21:3 For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.

Daniel 2:32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, 2:33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. 2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet [that were] of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. 2:35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. 2:36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. For the interpretation of the dream Read Daniel 2:37-49.

Water stores heat especially well. Example: Water at room temperature has 30 times as much heat energy as an equal weight of lead at the same temperature.

What does the following texts tell us about water?

John 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

Revelation 22:1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

What is Specific heat? What has a higher specific heat than any other substance?

Scientists call the heat capacity of a substance its specific heat. The specific heat is defined as the number of calories needed to raise one gram of the substance by a temperature of one degree Celsius. Water has a higher specific heat than almost any other everday substance. Even metals do not hold heat as well as water. Example: iron has a specific heat of 0.11 or 1/9 the specific heat of water. Suppose a kilogram (1000 grams) of iron and a kilogram of water were at room temperature 20 degrees Celsius. Heating a kilogram of water from 20 degrees Celsius to 21 degrees Celsius takes 1,000 calories of heat energy. The same heat energy changes the temperature of a kilogram iron bar by 9 degrees, from 20 degrees C to 29 degrees C.

What is a furnace? FUR'NACE, n. [L. fornax, furnus, either from burning, or the sense is an arch.]

1. A place where a vehement fire and heat may be made and maintained, for melting ores or metals, &c. A furnace for casting cannon and other large operations is inclosed with walls through which a current of air is blown from a large bellows. In smaller operations a vessel is constructed with a chamber or cavity, with a door and a gate.

2. In scripture, a place of cruel bondage and affliction. Deut. 4.

3. Grievous afflictions by which men are tried. Ezek. 22.

4. A place of temporal torment. Dan. 3.

5. Hell Matt. 13.

In the Bible there are 30 references for furnace. Lets look at a few:

Exodus 19:18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

Deuteronomy 4:20 But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, [even] out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as [ye are] this day. 1

Kings 8:51 For they [be] thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron:

Psalms 12:6 The words of the LORD [are] pure words: [as] silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

Proverbs 17:3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

Proverbs 27:21 As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.

Isaiah 31:9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire [is] in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 48:10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. 48:11 For mine own sake, [even] for mine own sake, will I do [it]: for how should [my name] be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another. 48:12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I [am] he; I [am] the first, I also [am] the last.

Jeremiah 11:4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day [that] I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:

Cool?

Weight for weight, water stores heat better than most other substances. Changing the temperature of water requires more heat energy than to change an identical mass of any other substance by the same temperature. Going the other way, as water cools, it releases more heat energy than the same mass of any other substance that cools by the same number of degrees.

The direction of motion of heat is always from a warmer region to a cooler region. The hotter region gets cooler and the cooler region gets warmer.

Heat moves from a higher temperature (high average kenetic energy) to a lower temperature (lower average kinetic energy). The average kinetic energy of the molecules become more nearly the same.

Conclusion

The amount of heat in a body depends on mass, temperature, and heat capacity of the substance.

Heat is the energy of motion of atoms and molecules.

Water has a higher specific heat than most everyday substances.

Heat is usually produced as energy changes form, as in work.

Now is the time when we should closely connect with God, the energy source for the the largest mass, the hottest temperature, and the highest heat capacity.

The Author of this spiritual life is unseen, and the exact method by which that life is imparted and sustained, it is beyond the power of human philosophy to explain. Yet the operations of the Spirit are always in harmony with the written word. As in the natural, so in the spiritual world. The natural life is preserved moment by moment by divine power; yet it is not sustained by a direct miracle, but through the use of blessings placed within our reach. So the spiritual life is sustained by the use of those means that Providence has supplied. If the follower of Christ would grow up "unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Ephesians 4:13), he must eat of the bread of life and drink of the water of salvation. He must watch and pray and work, in all things giving heed to the instructions of God in His word. {AA 284.2}
